I always knew I was supposed to help people. But after ignoring my intuition, I settled for \u201ca job and a 401(k).\u201d At 26, I was working 60 hours a week at a bank while raising two young boys with my husband. I was exhausted. I wasn\u2019t happy, and I certainly wasn\u2019t fun to be around.<\/p>\n

One night, my husband encouraged me to return to school, pursue additional training, and find the work that set my heart on fire. At the time, it felt like an ultimatum. Looking back, it was really a fork in the road\u2014one of those moments that changes your entire path.<\/p>\n

Until then, I hadn\u2019t realized how deeply I disliked what I was doing or how much that unhappiness followed me home. So, I quit the bank, gave two weeks\u2019 notice, and enrolled in nursing school.<\/p>\n

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University and began working as a bedside nurse at a local hospital in 2014. I cared for trauma patients at a Level I trauma center and loved being able to help people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. But I wanted to become more involved in their care, so I returned to school and became a nurse practitioner in 2019.<\/p>\n

I felt fulfilled by my work, but I often found that traditional healthcare settings didn\u2019t allow enough time to truly understand each patient. I wanted to talk with people, listen to their stories, learn about their lives, and investigate the reasons behind their symptoms. Health problems rarely happen overnight, and meaningful answers usually require looking at more than a diagnosis or a list of symptoms.<\/p>\n

Although caring for patients has always been my passion, understanding why symptoms occur is where my primary focus lies. I don\u2019t want to simply help someone manage how they feel. I want to ask deeper questions, look at the whole picture, and identify the underlying factors that may be affecting their health.<\/p>\n

Working in healthcare during the pandemic became another turning point. The experience forced me to reevaluate the kind of care I wanted to provide and whether the conventional healthcare system gave me enough time and freedom to provide it. Eventually, I stepped away from hospital care feeling exhausted, uncertain, and worried that perhaps I had missed my calling after all.<\/p>\n

I began working at a wellness center to restore my own mind, body, and spirit. That experience introduced me to functional medicine\u2014and helped me rediscover why I entered healthcare in the first place. I had found an approach that encouraged me to listen carefully, ask better questions, investigate underlying causes, and care for the whole person.<\/p>\n

I continue to deepen my education in functional medicine so I can better serve my patients and help those who want to optimize their health and daily lives. That journey inspired me to create Wholesome Health, a practice built around genuine relationships, thoughtful care, and uncovering the root causes behind how patients feel.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m not working, you can usually find me camping with my husband and children or running from one sporting event to the next. My name is Joey Reed and I am a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have a very diverse background including military medicine, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, pediatric and family medicine.\u00a0 I am thankful to have the rewarding job of being able to provide care to the pediatric population as they continue to grow from babies to toddlers, teens, and adults.\u00a0 Also, as an Ohio University graduate I have felt passionate in educating future nurse practitioners and have served as a preceptor during clinical rotations for well over 100 students. As I listen to patients list off their symptoms and concerns, I often have the question \"WHY?\"\u00a0 This has lead me into my passion of getting to the root cause and digging for that answer.\u00a0 As a provider I deeply value the relationships that I have with my patients and aim to support my patients as we navigate healthcare together as a team. Being a Nurse Practitioner is a big passion of mine but I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My husband and I have two wonderful children Knox and Baylor.\u00a0 We enjoy being outside, taking family trips, and making as many memories as we can.
